What a prosthodontist does, and why it is a separate specialty

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with restoring and replacing teeth. Where a surgeon works in bone, a prosthodontist works in form and function: the shape, shade, fit and bite of everything that sits in the visible mouth.

It is a more technical field than it looks. A crown that is a fraction of a millimetre proud will be felt on every bite and will eventually fail. A full arch has to distribute chewing forces evenly or it stresses the implants beneath it. Shade has to be matched to the surrounding teeth under different light.

This is the stage that determines whether the finished result looks like teeth rather than like dentistry — and whether it still works in five years.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prosthodontist, and how is it different from a general dentist?+
A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed additional specialist training in restoring and replacing teeth — crowns, veneers, bridges and implant-supported restorations. The specialty exists because fit, bite and appearance in complex cases require training beyond general dentistry.
Who fits my crowns and veneers at Dentfix?+
Zirconium crowns and veneer work are fitted by a prosthodontist — Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Atay or Dr. Suhan İnal. If your case also involves implants, the surgical stage is performed separately by our oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
What materials are used for the crowns?+
Zirconium crowns at Dentfix are made from FDA and CE-certified Ivoclar zirconia. Ceramic crowns and veneers use Ivoclar e.max. The material is chosen for the case rather than the other way round, and is confirmed in your written treatment plan.
How long do crowns and veneers last?+
Crowns and veneers carry a five to ten year guarantee at Dentfix, depending on the treatment and the brand used. Longevity in practice depends heavily on the fit of the original work and on your own maintenance and hygiene afterwards.
Can I see what my teeth will look like before the work is done?+
Yes. Smile design is part of the planning stage, and your treatment plan is agreed and quoted in writing before you travel, so there is no decision left to be made once you arrive in the chair.
